What color are your eyes?

Empath

Bright blue eyes are very pretty and that's about it. Have you ever seen anyone with Waardenburg Syndrome? Gorgeous, clear-blue eyes, all of them. They look like beautiful aliens.

Mine are swamp-green and not very sparkly or pretty. But I'm still an empath. I think the brown-eyed folks and I could be feeling a bit shoved aside.

Parents/Upbringing?

Empath

@hop-daddy. How funny. "Visitor" is my screen name, I'm registered with this site and I visit regularly. I contacted the hotline and it was like talking with a robot. I've made it my life's work to calm myself. Medications, vitamins, minerals, meditation, therapy, etc. etc. etc. I feel like I have no shield for the outside world right now. A whole lot of negative stuff is getting in.

More female empaths than male?

Empath

Posts like these bother me, I have to admit. They're generalizations, and it's not a good idea to make great big assumptions on something we still know so little about. I didn't know I was empathic until a few years ago. It never occurred to me that there are more females. I would tread cautiously before making a blanket statement like this.

Empaths and NDE's or Near Death Experiences

Empath

No NDE's here, but I've been fighting major depression since I was a very small child. I think it's exacerbated by empathy. I think my empathy has gotten stronger as I've gotten older. I feel grief-stricken right now, for no reason except that I hate the state of the world, and I may be picking up some of my neighbor's grief - she just lost her young son very suddenly. Watch the movie "Resurrection" with Ellen Burstyn - based on a true story. She had an NDE and developed healing powers.

My dogs are happier, I'm happier.

Animal Empaths

All I did was get a dog-proof fence built so they can't jump it. Now they can roam around the yard freely all day. They romp and run, sit in the sun, chew sticks, and bark at the neighbors' dogs. Their increased happiness has made me feel noticeably better and calmer!

How do you guys filter your energy?

Empath

I have a book called "Self-Care for the Self-Aware" by Dave Markowitz. A tiny little book fully of helpful exercises. I use the Keyhole exercise, where I create a hole in my middle and let all the bad energy pass through it. There are several other good exercises in it too.

I feel lonely if I put my dogs in their dog run outside. So yes, I feel their energy. I think I'm picking up on my neighbors' energy too. One neighbor just lost her son in a sudden, tragic way, and she's inconsolable. So am I, even though I haven't lost anyone recently. This is kind of a sad little neighborhood.

Parents/Upbringing?

Empath

I was raised in an agnostic family, very dysfunctional and hateful, although not any worse than a lot of other families. They thought I was a brat who was trying to get attention. I had no idea what an empath was, no idea if clairvoyance ran in our family or not. I just knew I was "too sensitive" to everything. My mother was the center of the family; neurotic, depressed, demanding, vindictive, punitive, sadistic, childish, etc. My father and the rest of us were co-dependents. The fact that I joined a church was met with scorn by my "realistic" family who believe we turn to dust when we die. I feel suicidal on a daily basis and right now I'm waiting for a suicide hotline to respond, so don't worry about me. I won't do it, but I'm tired of this stupid planet.

Anybody feel depressed in a college atmosphere?

Empath

@hop-daddy, I was also an administrative assistant to a dean and many faculty members. I didn't mind all the multi-tasking and busy work. I kind of like that stuff. But I felt totally unappreciated and unsupported. I put in 150% and got back 1%. I saved them a lot of money by managing their budgets (they hadn't bothered) but if I made one mistake on them, I got written up.

My question was regarding the intensity of the depression. I felt like ending it all. Other miserable jobs just make me feel like quitting - this one made me feel like my life was over. I'm wondering if I was picking up energy from students. A lot of them were "ungrateful" for the opportunity of going to college. Translate: They didn't know what they wanted to do with their lives and felt pressure to do something, so they went to college. Or maybe they liked college but it was a wrenching change from their usual routine.

It was a good job, too, paid decently, good benefits. I'm now unemployed and poor, but much happier than I was there. There's something up with college environments.

Anybody feel depressed in a college atmosphere?

Empath

I had to quit my job at a college because I was getting self-destructive thoughts. This isn't typical of me.

I just started wondering if college in general is a depressing place to be for faculty, staff, and/or students? I know I picked up a lot of negative energy there, more than any other job I've ever had (and I've had some stressful ones).

Does anybody have any insight into this? Any similar experience? I'm starting to think college students are far unhappier than we ever imagined.

Empath

There sure is a dark part!! I've been shaking non-stop for two months. I can barely eat. I sleep too much. This article talks about "the empath" and makes generalizations. I don't like that. There are millions of us and we're all different. We're not a Zodiac sign.

Empath

I think it's up to you. Personally, I'm not above lying and saying "Oh gee, I've got the worst stomachache. I can't make it." Then give her a nice gift after the shower, in person. Or if you're feeling tough, stop by for an hour and then have a reason to leave early. This friend of hers is obviously toxic to you, and I wish I could give you some shielding tips (alas, I'm lousy at doing that). But your friend is important to you and you shouldn't completely snub her.

Feeling a Steady Negative Energy Shift in Everyone Around Me

Part of the evolution? That sounds almost racist.

I don't mean it that way at all. I meant the evolution of humans to light beings. I've noticed that more and more people are being born with lighter colored eyes. For example, there are a lot more blue eyed adults, whereas brown eyes was most common. And I've noticed that even brown eyes are becoming a lighter shade of brown.

I'm not at all racist or prejudiced and you shouldn't throw accusations like that around.

I'm not accusing YOU of being racist, but it does sound a bit iffy. And I don't agree with it at all.

Past life Regression

Empath

Yes, although I wonder if some of them were imaginary. In one, I was a Native American boy who was very close to my mother. I kept revisiting this child until he finally was able to loosen his ties to his mother and be free. So that was helpful. And that was not imaginary, I'm sure.

In another one I was a female in a Northern European country, full of blondes. I had a dull, uneventful life, nothing terrible, but I was bitter and jealous of my daughter, who seemed to have everything. I seem to have carried that bitterness over into this life!! I reminded myself of my own mother. It was helpful in realizing how poisonous jealousy is.

A healer told me I was a prisoner on a pirate ship. That made sense, because I often have a trapped, helpless, doomed feeling about life, like nothing I do will make a difference. I didn't revisit that life, but I can picture one of the pirates, and ugly white man with hollow eyes and a shaved head to keep away lice. Yuck.

I feel like I've lived thousands of lives, in Africa, in Europe, in South America, and in the US. Probably a lot of other places, too.

Atheists

Empath

I have no room in my life for atheists, which unfortunately includes some of my family members. I'm not talking about agnostics. Agnostic means "without knowledge" and that's a fair thing to be. My religion is my lifeboat, and aggressive atheists are trying to throw darts in my lifeboat.

Anger...the taught emotion?

Empath

I think anger is something we're born with, and most of us don't use it properly. We're told to make it go away, so it implodes. If we channel it the right way, it can be a powerful tool. It tells us when things aren't right. Anger is good. (Hate is the bad one.)

I doubt it. Men have different methods of shielding, deflecting, denying, suppressing, but I think there are a lot of male empaths. I've met a lot of absorbent men - and boys. My youngest nephew is a powerful one.

Empath Related Illnesses

Empath

I have a whole arsenal of flu-be-gone products. Vitamin C, D3, B-complex, fish oil, calcium/magnesium to name a few. I always use liquid if I can instead of pills; it acts much faster. I have managed to avoid the flu for many, many years now, despite some very stressful situations. If I do get sick, it's for a few days only. I also stay warm, get lots of sleep, and avoid alcohol. I never get flu shots. I don't have a husband or kids (big risk factors, I know). I don't drink milk, juice, soda, or any milk-like product. Just water and coffee. It keeps my sinuses clear and working efficiently. Another helpful thing is ASMR - you can find it on YouTube. It's like meditation, very relaxing and pleasant.

I could write a book about it. My life isn't so terrible, but I look around me at the way people are, their politics, their morals, their habits, and I want to go home to where everybody takes care of everyone else, where nobody feels superior to anyone else, where people love animals and children and nature. Yes, I miss it every day.

My earliest memories are about age 2. But I think I have some vague memories that are earlier than that. For instance, being neglected as a baby - not in a criminal way, just not getting my diapers changed often enough. My body remembers being too cold, too itchy, too hot, etc. My mother wasn't into keeping us kids comfortable. If I sound bitter, yes, it's true.

New Age

I had a dream once where some guys were harassing me, trying to rape me. I was scared at first, but then realized I could fly, so I soared upward, pissed and vomited on them (sorry, TMI) and their car, and flew away. I don't know how I empowered myself in my dream, because I usually can't do that.

Think I had a glimpse of a past life

New Age

I had a flashback when I was visiting a shaman. I was a Native American boy, don't know what time period, but probably Civil War or earlier. I was very happy, living in the southwest, and I was very close to my mother (unlike this present life). I have been drawn to the southwest for many years, and finally moved there. It's been a rough go, but I never want to leave. I don't know what happened to the boy I was. (I'm female in this incarnation.)

Differences between Bipolar Disorder and Being a Empath

Empath

I've known bipolar people, and it's a genuine disorder, believe me. I've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, labels I accept (for now) because they work for me. I'm also an awakening empath. Bipolar disorder is a very difficult disease to keep under control, and it may be related to empathy, but it's not the same. One person I knew very well could be suicidal for weeks, then manic for days. He was sometimes manic and depressed at the same time. Mania was sometimes expressed as a feeling of great power, and sometimes it was pure rage. He was very empathic, but used it to manipulate people, not help them. I felt very relieved that I didn't have it myself. Bipolar disorder is sometimes tied to childhood sexual abuse (that was true in this person's case). I've heard that only a BP can understand another BP. I don't understand it, but it's definitely real, not just the "disorder of the month."

I usually pick up negative vibes around Christmas. Anger, despair, dissatisfaction, sorrow. And it's especially bad this year after the election. I've been staying home a lot (of course I don't have a job right now). I pick up stuff from the internet, too, but it's not as intense.

No, I don't pick up thoughts, just emotions, and I have no idea where they're coming from. Usually I'll have a delayed reaction after I get home. I'll say "Boy, I feel terrible - who gave me that?"

Anger...the taught emotion?

Empath

I'm a very angry person. Some of it comes from my life experience, but now I'm thinking that I'm picking up other people's anger and mistaking it for my own. I didn't know I was empathic until last year, so I'm new to this. I'm trying to drain out anger that isn't mine, and channel my own rage into a force for good. Wish me luck - I've got a long road ahead!

Sedona's Vortex

Empath

My brother married his soulmate in Sedona. It felt like angels and spirits were watching and blessing the union. They are two very imperfect people - in fact I don't even speak to them anymore - but they were meant to be together and standing outside surrounded by red rocks, watching them get married, I felt a definite magic around us.

Empath

I don't feel human, either. I'm not attracted to space or anything extraterrestrial. I don't know if I'm a "starseed" or just a tired old soul who doesn't understand this hateful, harsh planet I live on. It's a beautiful planet, except for one species - humans. I have a constant longing to "go home" - I don't know if that's another planet, another dimension, Heaven, or what it is I'm missing. I have to keep on finding reasons for living. NO, I'm not suicidal, never have been. I just feel like life is a job that I need to finish to the best of my ability before I leave.

Empath

There's no such thing as a perfect mother, but "hate" is a two-way street. You will not be able to repair your relationship with your kids unless THEY work with you 50/50. It sounds like you're the only one making an effort. I'm so sorry that your heart is breaking, but kids don't always turn out the way you raised them. Sometimes you have to turn your back on them for a while until they realize what they're missing from their life. In the meantime, take care of yourself and surround yourself with people who like you and enjoy your company.

Dark Siders

Empath

My nephew was watching a TV show about the human brain. It was saying that we are ALL hard-wired to be empathetic to others, feel pain when someone gets punched, feel hungry when we see someone eating ice cream. So I don't think empaths are that different - just more extreme than the average person.

Dark Siders

Empath

There are definitely empaths who use their gifts to cause harm. I dated such a man. But he didn't always use his skills to do bad things. He was simply lost and desperate. He had no money and no future, so he used women and manipulated them into taking care of him. He made them feel worthless. I was just one of them. I don't separate people into Good and Evil, because most of them have a bit of both in them. But in answer to your question, yes, of course there are dark empaths. They can read your mind (or almost) and figure out what's going to hurt you the worst, and then do it.

Find a healer or a shaman. Hands-on. I have similar problems when I'm stressed - my computer doesn't work well, etc. I kill watch batteries. You sound a LOT more powerful. If you could learn how to harness that energy you could move mountains (in a good way, of course).

Empath

In the past, I've had deep concerns about people (none as serious as your friend's) and I've asked a psychic healer to do a remote healing session on them. I learned about this healer word of mouth. If you don't know such a person, look for someone who has a lot of testimonials and has been doing it for many years. You might find someone online, in which case you'd have to pay by credit card. My healer charges $85/session. She's worked on me too, and she's done wonders.

Iraq and Iraqi People

Empath

I wonder if you lived a past life in Iraq. I don't feel that "pull" you mention, but I was horrified when I read about our invasion (ahem - pre-emptive strike) on Iraq. When they razed the country from south to north, the horrific state they left Basra in (it has never recovered), I thought it would take centuries to pay off this karma. Weren't we supposed to be after Saddam Hussein and him only? We destroyed that country. What if another country had destroyed us? I don't really see a difference. They're mostly regular people, trying to lead a regular life, like us. So my empathy rears its head, but you sound like you have a deeper connection.

Trump Vs. Clinton

Empath

Here's my two cents: I grew up with no internet, just a TV we were allowed to watch for an hour every night, and newspapers. I was blissfully naive about a lot of things. These days, nobody can be unaware of what's going on. It's the same stuff that's been going on for centuries; we just haven't had a bird's eye view of it the way we do now. The world is changing, and I think it will be for the better, but in the meantime it's like "moving day" - very stressful, anxious, lots of anger and sadness. I'm considered a "negative" person by my so-called family, but I am feeling very hopeful about the future. It's information overload that's changed everything; human dynamics are pretty much the same as ever.

Sad to say, you may have to ease them both out of your life. Unfortunately, empathic people tend to be irresistibly attractive. (I knew one lady who was fighting men off right and left, and I didn't envy her.) I don't know what advice to give other than that!

Feelings of hate

Empath

This sounds like something you need to take seriously. I used to have feelings like that all the time (and still do occasionally). I've tried meditation, medication, therapy, vitamins, you name it. Finally I saw a spiritual healer and then a shaman. The shaman found two entities inside me, both harmful, and removed them. Your feelings may not be your own feelings!! This is what you need to get at. I also found a little book called "Self-Care for the Self-Aware" (Markowitz) - it has some effective exercises in it. You can also find it online in pdf format. Google the name and you should find it.

By the way, I'm a Christian and I hate hypocritical, hateful "Christianity". That's not what it's supposed to be about. But I understand your rage at it.

Are we deemed to Hell?

Empath

No, and I'm Catholic. I think some people experience a temporary hell during a near-death experience, but they've lived to talk about it, so obviously they weren't doomed forever. One such person said he had never been an evil person, but he'd been selfish and self-involved, never thinking of other people, and just living his life to have fun. It doesn't sound like Hitler, does it? But he got a wake-up call. I do not believe in Hell, but I do believe in Heaven, and I think life on earth is a kind of purgatory - not all bad, not all good, and very confusing. We're here to learn and teach, I think.

Can someone who's never seen/heard spirit... learn to?

Empath

I'm kind of new at this, but I remember having a conversation with friends several years ago. We were comparing stories about our contact with the spirit world (it was very minimal). Another friend looked sad and said she never had an experience like that. I told her she probably had, and didn't know what signs to look for. I told her that pennies were one way spirits connected with us, and dreams. After that, she asked for dreams and got them!!! She was visited by a relative in at least one of them. She has more power than I do by a mile, but was just out of touch with it. We're all older women - over 50 - and sometimes it takes a while to discover your potential.
