People venting to you

Empath

These stories are amazing. I'd mention this sort of thing to friends, about the things random strangers feel like they can tell me, but they always think I'm exaggerating.

People venting to you

Empath

I'm waiting in the break room at work for my shift to start, and one of my coworkers randomly started venting to me about how her cat died recently. I've said hello to her occasionally, but this was our first full conversation. She told me about how her husband died two years ago, so her cat was a sort of anchor for her, helping her through it. She even showed me pictures of him, and when she started crying, I immediately stood up and hugged her, and she squeezed me tight. This sort of thing happens to me a lot, whether I know them or not. I know this is pretty common for empaths, because people are drawn to our heightened empathy. What are some stories that you guys have?

Hypersensitive to light and sound?

Empath

Ah, all of those make a lot of sense. Being sensitive to all energy, not just emotional (I'm also more in-tune with animals - big reason why I'm vegetarian)could definitely explain why sound and light energies could be draining for me. I never really thought about it in that way until now.

Hypersensitive to light and sound?

Empath

Same here. I have to have the brightness on my phone, laptop, and TV all turned down lower. Usually if I'm going to watch something with someone, I turn it up out of self-consciousness. Because I can tell that they're confused by it or want it turned up, even if they smile or don't say anything.

Hypersensitive to light and sound?

Empath

I might look into the film, because I wear glasses too. It would certainly be easier than confining myself to darkened rooms.Thank you all for your responses. Really. I wasn't sure if these things were related or not, but it's good to have an explanation for them.

Hypersensitive to light and sound?

Thank you, both of you. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I also have to keep the brightness on my electronics turned down (causing people to ask "How can you even see that?") I'll definitely try that, putting a cold wash cloth over my eyes when a headache gets too bad. That sounds really nice. Car alarms are the worst. I had to change my phone's ringtone to something more calming just to make it okay enough to answer when I need to. Trying to explain this to other people can get really frustrating.

Living with a depressed person

Empath

I'm currently living with my older sister, who is bipolar and struggles with PTSD. She has her good days and I love being around her then, but at times she can be very emotionally draining. If I don't find ways to release emotional buildup, it gives me migraines and stomach problems. I have candles with scents that are supposed to be good for this, like sage and lavender, so whenever her moods start to drag me down, I light one and make a pot of chamomile tea. Between the calming scent and the tea, most of the time, she calms down. And it gets rid of the knotted feeling in my stomach. If I know I can't talk her through something, I'll put on a funny show or movie she loves to shift her focus on something else.

Hypersensitive to light and sound?

Empath

Hello, first post here. I've always been extra sensitive to light and sound, but I wondered if it could have anything to do with my heightened sensitivity as an empath, or something separate. Bright lights or sunny days give me migraines, as well as any kind of loud or constant noise. Could these be related? If so, are there any recommendations for dealing with it? Being bombarded by the emotions of others is exhausting enough without being hypersensitive in this way too.
